Food: Day 5

Today was a bit of a sad day.

Today we ate the last frozen salmon from Alaska that we caught in the summer of 2011. My parents had some that they had taken home at Christmastime and we took this last piece. Because there is major risk of freezer burn, tonight we ate it. There is a sadness to that fact, a sort of ending. For some reason, the end of the salmon really closes a book.

For breakfast, we had yogurt and granola, lattes, and apples. This week has been a boring breakfast week.
For supper, we had Spicy Salmon and Turnip/Leek/Blue Cheese Gratin. The spicy seasoning recipe for this fish is so tasty. It does have a lot of spice, so you would want to lessen the cayenne if you don't like spice. This recipe works well on salmon, any white fish, and I think it would also be excellent on chicken. The recipe works better cooked in cast iron, but our cast iron has yet to be re-seasoned. The gratin recipe comes from Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone by Deborah Madison. A great book. The crisp recipe came from there as well. The gratin was wonderful. I love turnips, and if you cover them with cheese and cream Kennan loves them too.
This pear crisp is interesting because we used chopped almonds in place of oats in the topping. The taste is quite original and good. I wasn't sure what I would think, but it did complement the pear quite nicely. Definitely wouldn't do it for apple crisp, but for this, it works.

We also had another bottle of wine. That's the real life.
